Jeans are the garment where the two size systems collide. A man's jeans are tagged by the waist in inches; a woman's are tagged by a number that means nothing on its own, and often by a waist inch number too, which is why a woman can be a size 10 and a 29 at the same time. Cross-shopping between the two, or between countries, means translating all of it back to the one measurement that never lies: inches around your waist.

How jeans sizing works
Men's jeans use W and L: waist and inseam in inches, so 32x34 is a 32 inch waist and a 34 inch inside leg. The waist runs fairly true, an inch large at most. Women's jeans use US number sizes (00 to 24) that were never a measurement, plus, increasingly, a waist number that is vanity-inflated and drifts by brand. This calculator converts a men's W, a women's number, or a raw waist measurement into all of the others, and it does the men to women crossover that trips everyone up.
The method

UK = US + 4 · EU = US + 32
The women's ladder is genuinely a ladder, not a multiplication: it steps one inch per size at the low end, then widens to two inches per size and skips odd waists once you pass a 12. So we read the waist off the explicit chart below, the same ladder our pant size conversion uses, which is why the two pages always agree on a woman's size for a given waist.

The chart skips a few waists (30 to 31, 32 to 33) because the women's ladder does: sizes jump two inches at a time above a 12, and brands fill the odd waists with their own cut. For a waist that lands in one of those gaps, we give you the nearer size.
Men's to women's, and back
Both systems are anchored to the waist, so the crossover is just a lookup through inches, but two real differences survive the translation. First, cut: men's jeans run straight through the hip and seat and sit higher on the body, so a woman buying men's jeans in her waist size gets a roomier leg and a longer rise, which is exactly the boyfriend-jean look on purpose. Second, tags: women's waist tags are vanity-inflated where men's are close to honest, so if you are converting from a women's tag rather than a measured waist, expect the men's W to come out an inch or so smaller than the women's number implied.
Why the tag lies, and what to trust
Jeans vanity-size harder than any other garment. A labeled 28 can measure 28 inches in one brand and 30 in another, premium denim usually runs smaller than mall brands, and the same person genuinely swings two or three sizes across a mall. None of that is your body changing; it is marketing changing the label. The brand chart cluster people search (this label in that brand) exists precisely because the tags cannot be trusted against each other. The fix is boring and permanent: measure your waist once, and read every brand's own chart against that inch number rather than against the size you think you are. The inch has not moved since denim was invented. Only the flattery has.
